Shortlist Gallery

A place for all South Australians, Adelaide Contemporary, a new landmark on Adelaide’s celebrated North Terrace boulevard, is envisaged as a unique cultural destination physically and emotionally woven into the place and community. The building will showcase the treasures of South Australia’s State Collection and is intended to give a powerful boost to Adelaide’s creative economy.

One hundred and seven teams applied from five continents to design Adelaide Contemporary. A panel, chaired by Michael Lynch AO CBE, shortlisted six joint international and Australian teams to create the concept designs shown below. The jury met in May 2018 to interview the shortlist and selected the team led by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Woods Bagot as the winner of the competition.

Adelaide is located on the traditional lands of the Kaurna people and the project site, close to the Art Gallery of South Australia and part of the former Royal Adelaide Hospital site, is rich in Kaurna heritage.

We welcome your comments on the designs shown here. Please email the independent competition organisers. All comments will be collated and passed to Arts South Australia for their information.
