The Jury

Michael Lynch was Chief Executive of London’s Southbank Centre from 2002 until 2009 and was responsible for the major renovation of the Royal Festival Hall and the transformation of the Southbank cultural precinct.

Previously, Michael held positions as Chief Executive of the Sydney Opera House, General Manager of the Australia Council and General Manager of the Sydney Theatre Company.

From 2011 to 2015 he was Chief Executive of the West Kowloon Cultural District, an ambitious project which will see a huge arts precinct built on the shores of Hong Kong‘s Victoria Harbour.

Michael is currently Chairman of Circa, Chairman of the Sydney Community Foundation, and a Board Director of Belvoir Theatre.

Lee-Ann is a Narungga, Wirangu, Wotjobaluk woman and is well known throughout the Australian, Indigenous and international arts communities. Having worked across many major festivals, she has won numerous prizes for her contribution to the arts, including the Gladys Elphick Award and the Sidney Myer Facilitator Prize. She is the first Aboriginal woman to be appointed as Chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board in 40 years and is the first Aboriginal person to hold the Deputy Chair on the board of the Australia Council for the Arts.

She is the Co-Chair of Tarnanthi, the Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Visual Art, a member of the National Museum of Australia Indigenous Advisory Committee, and currently holds the position of Executive, Aboriginal Strategy, with the South Australian Film Corporation.

Beatrice Galilee is a New York-based curator, writer, critic, consultant and lecturer of contemporary art, architecture and design. In 2014, she was appointed the Daniel Brodsky Associate Curator of Architecture and Design at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. While at The Met she has curated site-specific installations by Wolfgang Tillmans, Cornelia Parker, and Adrián Villar Rojas. She is responsible for building the museum’s first modern and contemporary collection of architectural objects, photographs and films and has initiated major new public programmes for The Met. Former positions include Chief Curator of the 2013 Lisbon Architecture Triennale, co-curator at 2011 Gwangju Design Biennale and co-curator of the 2009 Shenzhen Hong Kong Biennale of Architecture. She co-founded The Gopher Hole, an exhibition space in London; has worked as a writer and editor for Icon and Domus magazines amongst many others; and was associate lecturer at London’s Central St Martins School of Art and Design.

Walter Hood is the Creative Director and Founder of Hood Design Studio in Oakland, California, United States. He is also a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and lectures on professional and theoretical projects nationally and internationally. Hood Design Studio is a tripartite practice, working across art + fabrication, design + landscape, and research + urbanism. The resulting urban spaces and their objects act as public sculpture, creating new apertures through which to see the surrounding emergent beauty, strangeness, and idiosyncrasies. The Studio’s award winning work has been featured in publications including Dwell, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Fast Company, Architectural Digest, Places Journal, and Landscape Architecture Magazine. Walter Hood is also a recipient of the 2017 Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award.

Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, David Knox has more than 30 years’ experience in the global oil and gas industry; he was Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Santos Limited from 2008 to 2015 and Chairman of the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association from 2011 to 2013. He was appointed as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the newly formed Australian Naval Infrastructure Pty Ltd in September 2017.

David is a Director of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Deputy Chair of the Economic Development Board of South Australia, Director of the Migration Council Australia, Chair of The Australian Centre for Social Innovation, member of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens Foundation, Council member of the Royal Institute of Australia, and Director of Redflow.

Toshiko Mori is the Robert P. Hubbard Professor in the Practice of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and was the chair of the department from 2002-2008. She is the principal of Toshiko Mori Architect PLLC. Their work has been exhibited at the 2012 and 2014 Venice Biennale and at the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. Architectural Digest named them amongst their AD100 in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Her awards include: the Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; the AIANY Medal of Honor; 2016 Architizer A+ awards; the Plan 2016 award; and the AIA 2017 Institute Honor Award. She has been appointed to juries for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the Sydney Modern Project Competition and as the chair of the 2017 Alvar Aalto Medal jury.

Dr Lisa Slade is Assistant Director, Artistic Programs at the Art Gallery of South Australia. She oversees staff and activities in curatorial, learning, publications and public programs. Her most recent curatorial projects include Sappers & Shrapnel: Contemporary art and the art of the trenches and the 2016 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Magic Object. 

Her forthcoming projects include the re-presentation of the Australian Art collection at the Art Gallery of South Australia, which will be launched in November this year. She is also the Chair of Artlink and a member of the National Cultural Heritage Committee.

Sally Smart is one of Australia’s most significant contemporary artists, recognised internationally for large-scale cut-out assemblage installations and, increasingly, performance and video.

Smart’s most recent work includes The Choreography of Cutting, Postmasters Gallery, New York (2016); Odyssey: Navigating Nameless Seas, Singapore Art Museum (2016); and Dark Heart: 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, Art Gallery of South Australia. She is represented in significant public and private collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Herbert F. Johnson Museum at Cornell University, and the British Museum.

Smart is currently Vice-Chancellor’s Professorial Fellow, University of Melbourne and a board member (Deputy Chair) of the National Association for the Visual Arts. She was appointed Sackler Fellow Artist-in-Residence at the University of Connecticut in 2012, and awarded an Australia Council Fellowship in 2014.

Tracey Whiting has over 30 years’ experience as a strategic marketing specialist focusing on major events and large-scale exhibitions, and is currently Chair of the Art Gallery of South Australia Board. Tracey has had a long association with the Gallery and has been instrumental in fundraising initiatives, fostering new audience development strategies including the introduction of the Gallery’s Contemporary Collectors Group.

She was previously a board member of the Art Gallery of South Australia and South Australian Museum, and for the past eleven years has been a Director of Solstice Media Limited and Motion Publishing.

The competition is being managed by Malcolm Reading Consultants (MRC). Malcolm, an architect by training, founded the company after six years as Director of Design and Architecture at the British Council. He has worked with many of the world’s leading cultural institutions including the V&A; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation; the Royal College of Art; Mumbai City Museum; the British Library; and the Natural History Museum. Recent MRC competitions include those for the UK Holocaust Memorial; Edinburgh’s Ross Pavilion; M.K. Čiurlionis Concert Centre in Kaunas, Lithuania; and the Art Mill, Qatar.

Malcolm was on the Board of Historic Royal Palaces from 2005-2014, is a Trustee of English Heritage, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He joined the Sovereign Grant Audit Committee in June 2015.
