Active Edge conveys Gallaudet’s identity and shelters its core. To build this Active Edge, we draw on DeafSpace principles and observations of the campus. By protecting the Deaf community, Active Edge creates a strong relationship between the campus and the community, the academic and the commercial.
Gallaudet’s Exemplar Building embraces the campus’s physical identity as a green oasis with an academic pursuit of innovation. The Exemplar anchors one end of the Active Edge while the Tapscott Plaza Gateway anchors the other. Serpentine Benches extend from the 6th Street gate and provide a meeting place for the Gallaudet community, where deaf and hearing interact and appreciate their different sensory worlds. More than most Universities, Gallaudet is represented by its people: Tapscott Plaza is the visitor’s first direct contact with the Gallaudet community.
