NEW DESIGN FOR THE PRECINCTS CREATES FUNCTIONAL PARK-LIKE SETTING IMBUED WITH MEANING

As part of Canterbury Cathedral's landscape design competition, the Dutch design collaborative Kossmann.dejong Exhibition Architects has re-envisioned the Precincts as an inviting green space where visitors can experience the Cathedral's historical and contemporary significance.

The concept designs propose several artistic installations intended to offer opportunities for visitors to reflect on the enduring role of the Cathedral in the local and global community, as well as the Anglican Communion's role in society. Initial ideas for these installations include paved mosaics, story gardens, personally narrated stories, sculptural elements, and a grid-like network of glowing crosses that refer to the site's archaeology and aim to transform the Precincts into an enchanting realm, particularly after dark. The designs also propose changes to outdoor paths in order to create more intuitive circulation routes and functional outdoor spaces.
